AI agents for business
An AI agent is software you give a job rather than a question. It reads what comes in, works out the next step, uses your systems and passes anything that matters to a person. A chatbot answers you. An agent gets on with the work and shows you what it did.

Chatbot, automation or agent?
| Chatbot | Automation | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You give it | A question | A fixed rule | A job and its limits |
| It uses | What you paste in | The apps you connect | Your systems, within set permissions |
| When it’s unexpected | It has a go, then it’s up to you | It stops | It works it through or asks a person |
| Best for | Drafts and research | Tidy, repeatable steps | Whole jobs with messy inputs |
Real jobs agents do
- Estimating agent. Prices jobs overnight from the plans and your rates, and leaves them for sign-off.
- Supplier check. Compares each invoice to the order and holds an overcharge for you to look at.
- Compliance agent. Watches tickets, rego and insurance, and sends reminders before they lapse.
- Lead agent. Answers enquiries after hours, asks the right questions and books the call.
- Claims agent. Builds progress claims from what’s been done on site, for someone to approve.
- Morning brief. Reads what moved overnight and tells you what needs you today.
Put a few together and you’ve got a team that works the night shift and hands your people a short list each morning. Ask for demo access to click through working ones on sample data.
Why most businesses aren’t there yet
The National AI Centre’s survey found Australian SMEs using AI mostly use it for content and data analysis, at 54% of them each. Agents and other complex uses remain largely untapped, which it puts down to low awareness and low confidence. That leaves plenty of room for the businesses that get it working early.
The rules that keep agents safe
- Read-only first. It watches and drafts before it’s allowed to touch anything.
- Least access. It reaches what its job needs and nothing else.
- A person approves anything that leaves the business.
- Everything’s logged. Who did what, when and why.
- Your data only. It sees your own data and nobody else’s.
- Outside text is just text. An email telling it to do something is still only an email. That attack is called prompt injection, and we test for it.

Where agents go wrong
They sound confident when they’re wrong, so the checking can’t be optional. They need a clear job, because “handle my emails” isn’t one. And they cost money to run, so an agent that saves twenty minutes a week isn’t worth building. Give each one a job with a wage attached.
Buy or build?
Platforms like Microsoft Copilot Studio and Salesforce Agentforce suit businesses already deep in those products. A custom agent pays when the job spans several systems or depends on your own rules and pricing. Either way, work out the sum first.

The infrastructure gap is costing you more than you think.
The businesses pulling ahead aren’t working harder. They’re running on better infrastructure. We build it, you own it, and it compounds. 15 minutes with a founder, no slides. If there’s no saving worth chasing, we’ll tell you.
Questions, answered first
What is an AI agent in simple terms?
Software you give a job to, like reading every supplier invoice and flagging the wrong ones. It works through the steps itself and passes anything that matters to a person.
What’s the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?
A chatbot waits for your question and answers it. An agent has a job, uses your systems to do it and tells you what it did.
Can an AI agent run without a person?
It can do the work without one, but it shouldn’t have the last word on anything that costs money or reaches a customer. On our builds a person approves those until it’s earned their trust.
Are AI agents safe for my business data?
They can be, if they’re set up properly. Ours run in accounts in your name, start read-only, get the least access they need and log every step. Your inputs don’t train the AI.
How long does it take to build an AI agent?
A build for one job usually takes weeks, not months. The audit comes first, so you know it’s worth building.
